One Leg at a Time
The internet is a very important medium for free speech, and American's need to realize the importance of protecting that medium. Free speech on the internet is in jeapordy. Bloggers in some countries, such as China, face serious jail time for excercising their right to blog on the internet. There have been several arrests of citizens for posting criticisms of their government and politics. Amnesty International wants bloggers to publicize this gross injustice and it is important that we answer this challenge. Freedom is the most important value; without it, nothing else matters. Large internet search engines such as yahoo and google have been aiding countries in the infringement of free speech. This is very wrong and I condemn it and I hope that other people will do the same thing.

Good point. I was just relaying an interesting and very important point from Amnesty International, but you are right that America is not perfect, and our freedoms not completely safeguarded. I do not think that an American would go to jail for criticizing President Bush, or else, I would already be behind bars, as would about 99.9 percent of the rest of American bloggers. Now, I am not trying to tell the rest of the world what to do because I am an American and come from a perfect system, I am supporting a basic human right. My belief that freedom of speech on the internet should be protected includes every country in the world and stems from the belief that no system is perfect. Now, if you don't believe that the world should be governed by over-arching moral principles, than that is where we must disagree. For your argument, we would have to disband organizations such as the United Nations, Amnesty International and other humanitarian structures that rally around the idea of a better world and a better system. I especially believe that countries who portray themselves as guardians of democracy, such as the United States, should take a strong stance against oppression of any kind and its citizens who take such pride in being free, should help protect that right throughout the world.
